Obituary for Carolyn Folmsbee

Carolyn Stamey Folmsbee, of Norman, OK, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 3rd at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 235 W Duffy in Norman, with Father Dwight Helt of St. John’s officiating.

Carolyn was born in Bangor Maine on April 1, 1934 to Genevieve Katherine (O’Donnell) and John Stamey. She grew up in Bangor and Plattsburgh, NY, graduated from Plattsburgh High School, and continued on to receive her Nursing and School Nurse Teaching degrees from SUNY’s Teachers College at Plattsburgh.

Carolyn married Dr. Glenn Arthur Folmsbee on December 19, 1955. For over 25 years, Carolyn and Glenn worked together as medical missionaries for the Reformed Church of America, first for 5 years in India, and then for 20 years in Yajalon Chiapas, Mexico, before retiring to Norman, OK.

Carolyn went on to work as a public health nurse for Oklahoma City-County Health Department and Blue Cross, and later for the Pioneer Library System Service Center. She had a lifelong love for horses, and enjoyed working with the ladies in the kitchen at St. John’s, keeping in touch with her many friends from the mission field, Associacion de Charros de Yajalon, and the OKC Sooner Saddle Club, fossil preparation at the Sam Noble Museum, and the many gatherings of her “international” family at their adopted home base – Norman (around the kitchen table). Carolyn is survived by her husband Glenn of the home, children Mark (Diana) of Ft. Bragg, NC, Raj of Norman, Paul (Angie) of Falls Church, VA, Martha of Long Island, NY, and Sue (Brooks) Kirlin of Norman; grandchildren Kuma (Aubrey), Sai, and Ryan; Chris (Nora) and Bradon; Chris (Janavi), Eric, and Megan; Jorge, Joshua, Joel, and Stephen; Jeni (Leroy), Christy (Richard), and Kayla; great-granddaughter Isis; and other family and friends.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents; step-mother May; brother Jack; infant sons Michael, David, and John; and great-granddaughter Samantha.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the memorial fund at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 235 W Duffy, Norman, OK 73069. The family of Carolyn Stamey Folmsbee wishes to thank the loving and compassionate staff of Lifecare.
