Ponca City Now - June 4, 2014 12:00 am
Bobby Ray Shelton, longtime resident of Ponca City, was called home by his Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 1, 2014. He was 84 years of age.
Bobby was born December 10, 1929 in Ponca City, the only child of Thomas Taylor Shelton and Opal Irene (Speed) Shelton. He was a graduate of Ponca City High School in 1948 and Oklahoma A&M College in 1955 with course completion in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. He served his country in the United States Army 5th Cavalry Regiment during the Korean War and was recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal and Army Occupation Medal (Japan). He married his best friend and sweetheart, Laveta Mae Fox on October 29, 1954 in the Ranch Drive Baptist Church.
Bobby was employed 30 years with Conoco, retiring in 1985. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church, American Quarter Horse Association and the NRA. Many will remember Bobby as a great and honest man, a fair and generous boss, a member of their Sunday School class, a gun trader, a hunter, a horseman and a “he can fix absolutely anything” guy. All these things are true; but first and foremost he was a devoted husband and amazing dad and grandpa.
He is survived by his three children, Connie Rae Johnson of Tulsa, Robert Shelton and wife Tracy, of Marland, and Tami McKeever and husband Danny, of Cashion; eight grandchildren, Ryan Johnson, Sarah Thompson, Holly Chandler and husband Colt, Amy Heppel and husband Shaun, Colt Kerr, Michael McKeever and wife Deann, Jacob McKeever and wife Kristy, and Kristen McKeever; seven great grandchildren, Mason and Raylee Thompson, Landon Schwartz, Braeden Bennett, Garet McKeever, Hattie McKeever, Cora McKeever, Max McKeever and Devon Meadows; other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Laveta, on August 19, 2011.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2014 in the First Baptist Church Worship Center with Pastor Andy Taylor presiding. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ponca City Humane Society, 900 West Prospect, Ponca City, Oklahoma 74601.
