A 17-year-old Newkirk resident died about 10:05 p.m. Wednesday in an accident on Peckham Road, about 5 miles northeast of Blackwell in Kay County.

The teen was driving a 2000 Mercury Sable and died at the scene of  the accident.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the vehicle was westbound on Peckham Road when it left the roadway to the left and rolled two and three-quarters time, coming to rest on the driver’s side. The driver was ejected approximately 10 feet, the Patrol reported. In its report, the Patrol cited excessive speed as  the cause of the accident.

The vehicle was equipped with seat belts, which were not in use, the Patrol reported.

Troopers of the Kay/Noble County Detachment of Troop K were assisted by the Blackwell Fire Department, Kay County Sheriff’s Office and Blackwell EMS.
