Newkirk Public Schools to resume classes on Tuesday, April 10
Ponca City Now - April 9, 2018 2:29 pm
According to the Newkirk Public Schools’ Facebook page:
Newkirk Public Schools will conclude their walkout on Monday, April 9. There will be no school this day. School will be back in session without further disruption on Tuesday, April 10. Friday, April 13 will be a school day (originally scheduled as a day out). Newkirk Schools will continue to send advocacy groups to the Capitol.
It has been decided by our teachers and administrators that Tuesday, April 10 is the day we should resume school. While many other school districts will continue the walkout, we felt it was in our best interest to return to school. I would like to say thank you to our teachers and support staff who chose to take part in the walkout. Some took part in multiple days and for very long hours. Your voices have been heard! Some majors battles have been won in recent weeks thanks in big part to the teacher walkout. Major legislation was passed to increase funding for education. Although some battles were won, the fight is not over in regards to funding education. For far too long education funding has been ignored in our state. We cannot afford to get to this point again. Our most precious resource, our kids, do not deserve to be neglected. I highly encourage our state legislators to prioritize education not only for the remainder of this session, but also in future sessions.
Sincerely,
Brady Barnes
Superintendent, Newkirk Public Schools
