A man died Monday after authorities said he fell through the ice on Grand Lake while reportedly trying to retrieve a dog that had fallen through the ice.

The Grand River Dam Authority said the body of a 53-year-old man was recovered Monday evening.

According to Tulsa-area television station KTUL, the Grand River Dam Authority said that the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office contacted officials shortly after 9:10 p.m. Monday about a man who had fallen through the ice near Port Duncan on Grand Lake’s Monkey Island. After Delaware County deputies arrived, they found the man near a dock in the water.

According to Grand River Dam Authority police officials, the man appeared to have gone out on the ice to retrieve a dog, which had also fallen through the ice.

KTUL reports that the Grand River Dam Authority said the man also fell through the ice and died because of the dangerously cold waters. Police recovered the man’s body around 10 p.m. Monday.
