The Winfield Police Department will host its first session of an “active shooter response education” class Tuesday at Baden Square from 1 to 4 p.m.

The second session will be Sept. 20, also at Baden Square.

The presentations, first announced by the WPD in April, are prepared by ALERRT Active Shooter Response Education. ALERRT, which stands for “Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training,” is based at Texas State University in San Marcos in partnership with the San Marcos Police Department and the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.

According to ALERRT’s website, it was named the “national standard in active shooter response training” by the FBI in 2013.

“Winfield Police Department is happy to announce two public presentations geared toward Active Shooter education,” the WPD said on its Facebook page. “This presentation is based off the ALERRT platform, which gives information on how to react during an active shooter scenario.

“This presentation is centered around businesses and schools, however, the general public is also invited to attend. Refreshments will not be provided.”

If anyone has questions, the WPD says to contact Capt. Chad Gordon at (620) 221-5540.
