(KOKH) — A shakeup in the Oklahoma State Board of Education, the Oklahoma House passing its first bill of the session and the Board of Equalization certifying funds for the legislature to appropriate for FY26 are just some of what made for a bustling week in Oklahoma state politics.
House Bill 1276 passed on the House floor in a 82-9 vote on Thursday. This bill would require school boards in Oklahoma to adopt a policies that would prohibit the use of cell phones at school from the first bell of the day to the last.
“I think it’s a great first step. We’re halfway across the finish line. Senator Seifried I think has done a great job rallying support and building awareness around this issue over on the Senate side. Really appreciated the support of my colleagues really on both sides of the aisle,” said author of the bill, Rep. Chad Caldwell R-Enid.
Lawmakers will be looking at more legislation this week, including House Bill 1100. This bill would require clear and convincing evidence to keep a child from its parent or guardian. It would also impose felony kidnapping charges on a DHS employee who is responsible for approving the continued holding or release of a child for noncompliance.
Senate Bill 158 will also be up for consideration. The bill would require storm chasers in Oklahoma to meet certain criteria and apply for a state issued license.
Lawmakers will also consider a patient rights bill, House Bill 1600. The bill outlines rights including visitation and an understanding of care.
