Veterans To Be Honored Saturday with Parade and More

The day (Saturday Nov. 5) is full of events and activities starting with

The Ponca City Aviation Booster Club’s Monthly Fly-in Breakfast on Saturday from 7 ‘til 10 AM at the Ponca City Airport. The breakfast buffet includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, hash browns, fresh fruit, coffee, and orange juice. Cost is just $8 for adults, and $4 for children.

The Ponca City Veterans Parade, the largest in Oklahoma, will start downtown at 10:45.  1230 WBBZ will broadcast the parade starting with coverage at 10:30 for those who can’t make it.   The Grand Marshall for parade is Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Dwight Birdwell, one of the first U.S. soldiers to engage the enemy during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam and the author of a book called “A Hundred Miles of Bad Road”, an account of his war-time experiences. The parade will include over 100 entries this year, which is double entries from last year.

The Annual Veteran’s Day Celebration of Freedom in War Memorial Park gets underway after the parade, and will include food, entertainment, re-enactors military vehicles and memorabilia, kid-friendly activities and a beer Garden.  There’s also A BBQ served by Equity Bank, Cherokee Strip Credit Union and the AMBUCS; the meal is free to veterans and those possessing a parade button. Buttons are available at the Park for $10.

And in Newkirk, Phase II of the Kay County Walk of Warriors, at the War Memorial in front of the Kay a country Courthouse, will be dedicated at 4 p.m. Saturday
