NEWKIRK – U.S. Highway 77 north of Newkirk is a stretch of highway that provides potholes and no shoulders, making it difficult for vehicles to drive on. That is likely to change as the Oklahoma Department of Transportation was recently awarded a $9 million contract to resurface the highway.
Evans & Associates won the bid at exactly $9,346,021.75 as they were the only bidder. The highway is known to flood when only an inch or two of rain occurs. The resurfacing project will start at first street on the north end of Newkirk and will finish at Gate Road. The road will be completely resurfaced an 8-foot shoulders will be added.
The project will extend to an area that has already been resurfaced near the casinos. Work is expected to begin in late spring and will likely take about a year. Motorists will need to prepare to slow down as traffic will be narrowed to one lane with traffic signals
