#7 Mavs rout Western
The 7th ranked Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks routed Western 92-70 Monday night at Foster-Piper Fieldhouse while the Lady Mavs lost to Western 70-59.
NOC (18-2) improved to 4-2 in Region 2 while Western (9-10) dropped to 1-5.
The Lady Mavs (3-15) fell to 0-6 in league play while Western improved to 10-8) and 3-3 in OCAC play.
Mavs 92, Western 70
The Mavs used 21 points from Avante Lederer to cruise past Western Monday night.
Barron Tanner added 17 points off the Mavs bench while Tyrel Morgan added 16.
NOC led Western 49-39 at half behind Lederer’s five 3-point baskets. Then, Western cut the lead to 60-55 early in the second half before the Mavs went on a 20-1 run to build an 80-56 lead.
“I’m glad we bounced back from our Murray game (66-62 loss),” said coach Donnie Jackson. “The guys had two good practices leading up to Western. I wasn’t expecting zone for 40 minutes but it was good for our guys to see that.”
“We weren’t overly sharp at the beginning of the game but we had consistent energy for the most part and I credit our depth for being the advantage of us winning this game,” he added.
“We have a big road game Thursday at Eastern,” he said. “They are a really, really good team at home, they play a unique style and they fire up a bunch of 3-pointers. We will need to have two good days of practice and a locked in mindset if we want to win.”
Western 70, Lady Mavs 59
A slow start doomed the Lady Mavs Monday night against Western in a 70-59 loss.
Western jumped out to an 18-3 first quarter lead forcing NOC to play catch-up the entire night.
NOC trailed 43-19 at half but rallied in the second half cutting the Western lead to 65-58 with 1:11 to play before losing 70-59.
Hannah Maples led the Lady Mavs with 18 while Lauren Coates added 14 from the NOC bench.
“Inserting Lauren Coates and Caitlin Bailey into the starting lineup in the second half added a lot of energy to our defense which in turn helped our production on offense,” said coach Greg Krause. “Even though we didn’t win, that second half effort will add positive momentum going into the next game.”
