Watch the school zones in Blackwell and Tonkawa today as kids head back to class today. First day for Ponca City and Frontier is Monday. And today is the “make up day” for registration for Ponca City students. Drop by 111 West Grand between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
With students going back to school, the safety resource center has a few safety reminders for school zone areas. Drivers should be on high alert when the school zones are active, which is normally 7 a.m.-8 a.m. and 3 p.m.-4 p.m. since those are normally the times students are walking to and from school.
You should also schedule extra time when driving through a school zone, especially if you’re dropping off or picking up your child as traffic can get busy in the school zone.
Don’t forget that speed limits drop in school zones to reduce accidents and protect drivers and students. Make sure to not block any crosswalks and slow down when approaching one as students and teachers will be crossing.
In Oklahoma, and all other 49 states, it’s illegal to pass a stopped school bus that has a stop sign extended and lights on. This indicates that children are getting off the bus. Most bus-related incidents happen due to vehicles not following this law.
Children waiting on a bus are likely to be close to the street, so remember to keep a sharp eye out as they might accidentally step into the street.
