The City of Blackwell is once again hosting the Local and Kay County 4-H and Junior Live Stock Shows.
Young individuals will have the opportunity to display their livestock that they’ve been taking care of. The Local Show will go on Sunday in the livestock building at the Kay County Free Fairgrounds in Blackwell. According to the Blackwell Journal-Tribune, the show will start at 1 p.m. Sunday and will go throughout the afternoon.
From 7-8 p.m. that night, facilities will be open for participants in the 2022 Kay County Junior Livestock Show to bring in their sheep and goats. Lamb weigh-in and classification will be from 8-9 a.m. Monday morning, followed by goat weigh-ins from 9-10 a.m. The lamb show will begin at 11 a.m. starting with ewes, followed by wethers.
The goat show will take place 30 minutes after the lamb show, with does followed by wethers. The doe fitting contest will take place 30 minutes after that. One hour after the show, all goats and sheep must be removed before the barns close at 10 p.m.
On Tuesday, the hog weigh-in will take place from 8-9 a.m. The hog show will be at 11 a.m., with purebred gilts followed by commercial gilts. There will be a 20-minute break before barrows. Barrows must stay in their trailers and can be switched at any time, but they must be in the barn 20 minutes after the gilt show. Hogs must be removed within an hour following the conclusion of the hog show.
No cattle will be allowed in the show barn until Wednesday morning, but they can be in the Whitman Arena that day and night.
On Feb. 23, cattle weigh-in will take place from 8-9 a.m. The cattle show will begin at noon, with heifers followed by steers.
Cattle are to be removed within an hour after the show unless the cattle are in the fitting contest. The preliminary premium lineup will be posted 30 minutes after the cattle show.
At 6 p.m., the Kay County Fair Board will host commercial group interviews, as well as the AFR Speech Contest. Cleanup will be on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. The awards banquet will be on Feb. 25 at the Event Center at the fairgrounds.
