Marland’s Grand Home will present part one of a Listen and Learn series titled the “Marland Hunting Camps of the 1920s” on Saturday, March 9 at 10:00 a.m. E.W. Marland, founder and president of the Marland Oil Company, which later became Conoco, owned and/or participated in three camps where he and his friends met to hunt game. The camps included the Bar L Camp, just south of Ponca City along the Arkansas River; the Circle M Plantation, close to Macon, Mississippi; and the Saline Game Preserve, in the area of what is now the Great Salt Plains Wildlife Refuge of Oklahoma.
Guest speaker for the Marland Hunting Camps of the 1920s – Part One presentation will be Jayne Detten. Detten is the Assistant Director of the Marland Estate and the Marland’s Grand Home. Detten stated, “Listen and Learn series presentations are given three to four times per year and are planned to reflect the artifacts and history of E.W. Marland and the Marland’s Grand Home.” Detten continued, “The Marland Hunting Camps presentation will be given in two parts, one covering the Bar L and Circle M camps, and the other covering the Saline Game Preserve, better known to locals as ‘The Dog Ranch’.”
Guest speaker for the Marland Hunting Camps of the 1920s – Part Two presentation will be Paula Carmack Denson, author of the book The Dog Ranch. Denson, a local historian now living in Oklahoma City, has researched much of the Marland history and written several books on her findings. Detten noted, “A date for part two of the camp presentation has not yet been set, but will most probably resume sometime this year.”
