Kay Electric Cooperative’s annual essay contest wrapped up on the evening of March 1, 2021. This year’s topic was “What moment in American history do you wish you had been a part of and what would you have contributed?” Forty-eight area juniors wrote some impressive essays about America’s past while the top eight competed for scholarships and cash prizes.

First place Hunter Easley from Blackwell High School and second place Danielle Buttrum from Garber High School each received a $2,500 scholarship. Third place Charleigh Haskins from Blackwell High School and fourth place Brady Harman from Frontier High School each received a $2000 scholarship, while Serena Horinek and Allyson Boone from Frontier High School, Gracee Stierwalt from Shidler High School and Rachel DeBoard from DCLA High School all received cash prizes.

The area 8th graders competed in an essay competition as well. The theme of their essay was “What does being an American mean to you?” There were 65 amazing essays submitted with the top six essay writers winning a Chromebook. These students are Cash Orr from Blackwell, Colton Steinert and Treven Blaser from Garber, Homeschooled Hannah Cross and Allison Schneeberger from Newkirk, and Erick Skrdla from Medford.
