Heat Advisory in effect until Saturday

The National Weather Service in Norman has placed Kay County and surrounding areas under a Heat Advisory for Thursday and going until 7 p.m. Saturday. .

Heat index values could reach 105, and Ponca City will see highs in the upper 90s. Oklahoma counties included in the Heat Advisory are Woods, Alfalfa, Grant, Kay, Major, Garfield, Noble, Blaine, Kingfisher, Logan-Payne, Caddo, Canadian, Oklahoma, Lincoln, Grady, McClain, Cleveland, Pottawatomie, Seminole, Hughes, Comanche, Stephens, Garvin, Murray, Pontotoc, Coal, Cotton, Jefferson, Carter, Johnston, Atoka, Love, Marshall and Bryan.

Make sure to drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated, stay in air-cooled areas if possible and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.
