Deer Creek-Lamont Qualifies For Academic Bowl State Tournament

The Deer Creek-Lamont Academic Bowl Team recently won the Area Championship at Kremlin on Saturday, January 12 and qualified for the 2019 Class A State Tournament that is to be held at Redlands College in El Reno on February 2.

The members of the team are seniors Isaiah Spurlin, Albany Blackburn, Tanya Crain and Austin Wheat. Sophomores include Abigail Cardwell and Cade Light. Freshmen include Adriahna Blackburn and Emmon Blackburn. The team is coached by Kelly Riddle. The team currently has a 25-10 record with all but 3 losses to schools in Class 3A or higher. The team has won several trophies prior to the Area one which includes 2nd place for the Top of Oklahoma Conference that includes 4A Blackwell, 3A Tonkawa and 3A Newkirk. The team also took 3rd place at Northern Oklahoma College where both losses were to 3A Caney Valley, and tied for 1st for Cherokee Strip Conference.

Team Captain Isaiah Spurlin was named to the all-tournament and all-conference team at all three events and was MVP at Top of Oklahoma and NOC. At Area, the DCLA Eagles swept through the competition and gained victories over Schulter 210-90,  Kremlin-Hillsdale 230-160 and Mulhall-Orlando 180-110 to claim the first Area Championship in school history.
