The $1.4 million capital campaign to fund the expansion of the Ponca City Humane Society is going into its second week. The volunteer enthusiasm is growing along with the projects donations.
PCHuS board member Lisa Hinch said that she used to think she couldn’t volunteer for an organization due to the sadness caused by the way people abandon and abuse animals. She then learned that sadness was the enemy, but was instead her sitting and doing nothing. That is when she stepped out of her comfort zone and began to reach out. The legal secretary feels this passion for pets because they give unconditional love and pets can make a difference in our lives while sadly not having a voice of their own, as well as very few rights under the law and no safety net in society.
Hinch says that volunteering with the Humane Society leaves her with a good feeling and helps her show love and compassion to offer while willing to help. Hinch is also helping pets find a safe, loving home. Before an adoption is approved, the PCHuS staff carefully considers each adoption prospect. Those that want to adopt an animal from the local, no-kill shelter must complete an adoption application. The applicant then makes an appointment to meet with the staff and view the puppy, kitten, dog or cat. Adoption fees range from $50 – $150. The Humane Society spares no expense to give each abused, sick or injured animal the best chance at recovery. Pet wonders can ask for vouchers for low-cost spay or neuter medical procedures.
Hinch is excited about all the aspects of the new facility and what it will mean to Ponca City. When all is completed, the Ponca City Humane Society facilities will feature state-of-the-art ventilation and safe housing technologies along with an animal admission entrance that is separate from the public’s new larger reception area. Also, new treatment, recovery, quarantine, birthing and nursing spaces will be constructed. Hinch invites everyone to share in this “feel good” feeling by supporting the capital campaign.
The expansion’s ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled for March 1. Over $900,000 of the $1.4 million needed to complete the campaign has already been raised.
