The #3 Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks split a pair of games with Hesston (KS) Tuesday at NOC.
NOC (1-1) won the first game 8-2 and lost the night cap 10-9.
“Walks were a problem for our pitching staff all day and it caught up to us in game 2.,” said coach Ryan Bay. “There will be some growing pains the early part of this season but I’ve got confidence that our guys will make the necessary adjustments for this weekend series against DMACC.”
Game 1
NOC scored eight runs the first three innings and six Maverick pitchers allowed just two runs on two hits in an 8-2 win over Hesston.
Bryant Bailey homered and drove in two runs while Josh Bumgarner had a double and three runs batted in for the Mavs. Bo Charboneau also had two rbi’s for the Mavs.
Jacob Ellis, Chase DeFillippo, Jackie Robinson, Brysen Williams, and Kirby Lohrengal each tossed one inning while Luke Livian pitched two. Mavs’ pitchers struck out 10 and walked nine allowing just two hits.
The Mavs plated five runs in the first and led 5-2 before scoring three unanswered runs in the second and third innings.
Game 2
In Game 2, the Mavs trailed early 5-1 and then rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the 5th.
Hesston then answered with five runs in the 6th and held for the 10-9 win. The Mavs had the tying and go-ahead runs on when the final out was made.
Bailey, Zach Goodwin, and Matthew Minion had two hits each. Geovanni Bernard had a double and three runs batted in. Priest also had a double and two runs batted in.
Blake Hubbard was the starter followed by David Carr, Zach Stephenson, Dylan Hamilton, Gabriel Subirats, Carter Hines, and Josh Bumgarner. Mavs’ hurlers fanned 10 and walked 11 in Game 2.
The Mavs host Des Moines Area Community College for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
