McAlester, Oklahoma – News 9

McAlester, Oklahoma. This is where Julius Jones will be executed by lethal injection Thursday at 4 p.m. unless Governor Kevin Stitt grants clemency.

A little more than two weeks ago, the Oklahoma Pardon & Parole Board recommended clemency for Jones. They recommended his punishment be reduced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

While the board’s decision carries weight, Governor Stitt is the only one who can make the final decision.

Jones was found guilty of the murder of Paul Howell in 1999.  Howell’s family says they feel “re-victimized” as Jones’ case has gained national attention.

“Julius Jones never said a word. He just put a gun to my brother’s temple and shot,” said Megan Tobey, a witness to the murder.

The Governor has met with Jones’ legal team, the Howell family’s legal team, and Paul Howell’s relatives.  Stitt has refused to meet with the Jones family so far.

Jones has remained steadfast in his not guilty plea. He says he was framed for the murder and given an unfair trial.

“I just thank God for the opportunity to at least try, and God brought my beautiful, wonderful son here, and it’s His responsibility to take my son,” said Madeline Davis-Jones, Julius’ mother.

Jones supporters are planning to gather in McAlester at 8 a.m. on Thursday. If the Governor does not stop the execution, it will move forward.
