How Much Snow Could We Get Valentine’s Day Weekend?

OKLAHOMA CITY – The crazy winter of 2021 just keeps getting crazier. Two winter storms are possible Valentine’s Day weekend across Oklahoma, according to News 9 Chief Meteorologist David Payne — and the second storm could produce blizzard-like conditions Oklahoma hasn’t seen since 2011.

The first storm is expected to move into Oklahoma late Friday into Saturday. The Oklahoma City metro area could see 1 to 2 inches of snow, and northwest Oklahoma might get 2 to 3 inches. The second storm is potentially much more potent.

!!!WEEKEND SNOW UPDATE!!!

Here’s the deal. There is the potential for some big time snow this weekend. It would arrive in two rounds, the first on Friday night into Saturday and the second through the day Sunday into Monday.

WHY SO MUCH SNOW? December and January’s snow fell in 32° air and was a heavy, WET snow. The air over Oklahoma NOW is MUCH colder (single digits and teens) and very dry. When snow falls in this environment, the snow-to-liquid ratio is MUCH higher (meaning it’s a “dry” snow) and piles up much more easily, hence the potential for higher snow totals. AND! We won’t have any ice to cut into the snow totals. The precipitation will start and end as ALL SNOW.

This is our forecast for right now. Will it change? Yes. Could these totals still happen? Possibly. We’re watching the trends and will keep you advised every day this week.
