Health Experts Highlight Overlooked Medical Checkup, Climate Change Risks

CBS News - September 3, 2024 5:57 am

Health experts are raising concerns about a medical checkup that many people often neglect. New research highlights health risks tied to climate change and other significant health issues.

A study from the American Society for Microbiology suggests that climate change could lead to a rise in foodborne illnesses.

The research found that increased humidity allows Salmonella bacteria to thrive on plants. Salmonella currently affects 1.2 million people in the U.S. each year.

Heart specialists are also stressing the importance of monitoring lipoprotein levels, a checkup that is often overlooked.

Research from Poland shows that measuring these levels, which are influenced by genetics, can indicate the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. Doctors recommend regular monitoring to catch these conditions early.

Additionally, a study in the U.K. found that a healthy lifestyle can mitigate the brain aging associated with diabetes.

The research discovered that individuals with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes who engage in regular exercise, avoid smoking, and limit alcohol consumption did not experience accelerated brain aging. Poorly controlled diabetes can age a person’s brain by up to four years, which is a potential warning sign for dementia.
