The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that a fatality collision occurred at about 5:34 a.m. on Sunday on Interstate 35 northbound near mile marker 221, in Blackwell, OK in Kay County.

The patrol said the accident involved a 2014 Toyota Tundra driven by Byron Richmond (SIC), 44, of Edmond, OK. Richmond was pronounced deceased on scene by the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner.

The second vehicle involved was a 2021 Ford F-350 driven by Earl Hayden York (SIC), 23, of Longwood, FL. York was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS by Medi-flight, where he was admitted in critical condition with head and internal trunk injuries.

The third vehicle involved was a 2022 Chevy Silverado driven by David Boisvert (SIC), 54, of Olathe, KS. Boisvert was not injured.

The fourth vehicle involved was a 1997 Lincoln Town Car, driven by Jose Hernandez, 47, of Wichita, KS. Hernandez was not injured.

The Highway Patrol’s report stated that Richmond’s vehicle was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes for an unknown reason. Richmond’s vehicle collided with York’s vehicle head on, causing Boisvert’s vehicle to impact York’s vehicle on the passenger side. Hernandez’s vehicle swerved to attempt to avoid impact and in turn collided with the cable barrier. Seatbelts were equipped in all vehicles, though reportedly not in use in York’s vehicle. Airbags were equipped in all vehicles, and reportedly deployed in all but Hernandez’s vehicle. The report notes suspected alcohol from Richmond and lists the condition of the other three drivers as apparently normal. The cause of the collision is still under investigation at this time.

Investigated by Trooper Aaron Crompton #851 of the Kay and Noble county detachment of Troop K. Assisted by the Blackwell Police Department, Kay County Sheriff’s Office, Blackwell Fire Department, Blackwell EMS, Oklahoma State Medical Examiner, Oklahoma Department of Transportation, and Medi-Flight.

This report is based upon the trooper’s investigation of this collision. It may contain the opinion of the trooper.
