EMSA Shares Cold Weather Safety Tips

Dangerously cold temperatures in Green Country,  paramedics say to look out for frostbite and hypothermia.

“Frostbite can cause numbness and discoloration in fingers and toes and other exposed areas. That’s why we recommend those hats, gloves, and other items to protect yourself. And then hypothermia symptoms are more severe, and those include shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and drowsiness,” said Ryley Howard, an EMSA Paramedic.

To help prevent these cold-related illnesses, EMSA shared with us a few tips they say can go a long way.

“We want folks to limit their time outside. When the temperatures drop, it’s important to limit your time outdoors to avoid exposure to the cold. If you do have to go outside, take breaks indoors to warm up,” said Howard.

And if you do go outside, it’s very important to wear multiple layers.

“Dressing in layers helps trap that body heat, and keeps you warmer than wearing a single heavy garment,” said Howard.

Howard says another nice thing about dressing in layers is that you can shed them as needed.

Aside from clothes, it’s important that you avoid getting wet and then going outside.

“Super important to stay dry. Moisture can pull heat away from your body, so make sure to stay dry as well. And if your clothes do get wet, take them off immediately,” says Howard.

Another tip Howard shared with us is to avoid alcohol.

In fact, he says it can increase your chances of getting a cold-related illness.

“Alcohol may make you feel warm temporarily, but it actually lowers your core body temperature and increases your risk of hypothermia,” said Howard.

EMSA says during these cold temperatures, it is also important to look out for one another.

“Check on our neighbors, friends, and family. Make it a habit to check on elderly neighbors, friends, and family members as they’re especially vulnerable during extreme cold,” said Howard.

Howard also spoke with NewsChannel 8 about preventing carbon monoxide poisoning.

“If you’re using a gas or space heater, ensure they’re in good condition and properly ventilated,” said Howard.

He also says to never use ovens, grills, or stove tops to heat your home.
