Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Ponca City Now - August 31, 2015 10:44 am

The Ponca City Police Department will be conducting a traffic safety checkpoint later this week at an undisclosed location.

The PCPD is one of the many law enforcement agencies that receive grant funding from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office in conjunction with the National Highway Safety Office campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

It runs from Aug. 21 through Sept. 7. This effort’s goal is to reduce the number of drunken drivers on the roads and save lives. Law enforcement nationwide will show no tolerance for drunken driving.

In 2013, there were 10,076 people killed in drunken driving crashes. That counts for nearly one third of all traffic fatalities. Thirty eight percent of crash fatalities on Labor Day weekend that year involved drunken drivers.

PCPD Patrol Division Captain Earl Watkins is coordinating the local traffic safety checkpoint.
