Ponca City Now - November 20, 2013 9:07 am

There are just a few more hours to file for the open district two county commissioner seat.

Steve Austin, current district two county commissioner is retiring.

Cheryl Howard, election board secretary said you just have to pay a $200 fee and fill out a form.

“The county commissioner seat doesn’t have anything specific," Howard said. "For the sheriffs you have to have CLEAT training, but there isn’t anything like that for the commissioner race. They do have to be a resident of the district six months prior to the filing period.”

Jason Shanks of Newkirk is currently the only candidate.

The primary election will be held Jan. 14.

If they don’t need a primary the general election will be held that day.

The elected commissioner will represent Kay county with three other commissioners.

To run you must file at the Kay county election office by 5 p.m.
