Community Rallies Behind American Flag Amidst Edmond Public Schools Policy Controversy

KOKH - August 26, 2024 10:12 am

There’s outrage in Edmond after students were told they aren’t allowed to display the American flag.

Now the community is getting involved.

At least 100 vehicles showed up at Edmond North High School Monday morning to protest Edmond Public Schools’ (EPS) flag policy.

According to an EPS spokesperson, the district doesn’t allow students to display or bring any flag to school, including the American flag.

He said the policy is in place to limit distraction and have a safe environment.

The policy has been in place for years but now some students have gone to social media to complain.

Those complaints have sparked controversy online and in the Edmond community, even getting the attention of State Superintendent Ryan Walters.

Walters posted on social media about the controversy stating:

Patriotism should never be penalized at Oklahoma schools. Ever. EPS has a history of prioritizing woke agendas over our history and our freedoms. We will investigate and I will act.

A Facebook group organized the rally that started at 7:30 a.m.

Dozens of people responded to the group saying they would show up.

The group said it was not meant to be a political rally, but instead focused on patriotism and the meaning of the American flag.
