The Grand Chalk-Off is happening in Downtown Ponca City on July 31.

The Ponca City Art Center has announced that it is sponsoring a Downtown Chalk Art Contest July 31.

Registration is now open and registration forms can be downloaded from www.PoncaCityArtCenter.org . Participants are encouraged to register before July 27. Day-of registration will be available as space allows.

Categories and registration fees for the contest are: Professional Artist, $20; Amateur, $15; and Business, $20.

Cash prizes will be given to winners in each category. A free kids’ drawing area will also be available.

This contest will be judged by local professionals Chris Henderson, Director of Development Services for the City of Ponca City, and Chelsea McConnell, Main Street Director. A third judge will be announced soon.

Artists may check in from 9 to 11 a.m. and chalk art must be completed by 4 p.m. Judging will take place from 4 to 5 p.m.

“Public art enhances places and events in new and exciting ways," Kelsey Wagner, Executive Director of the Ponca City Art Center says . "Art events, like this chalk art contest, gives people a chance to express feelings and emotions about current events, history, pop culture or a million other things in a way that the community can see and experience. Public art can be a positive way for the community to collectively express its views and opinions.”

Because this is a temporary art medium, this art will only be available to view Friday, July 31, at the Crazy Days Street Party.
