‘Can you hear me?’ scam may have reached Ponca City

A scam that has recently received state and national news attention may have just hit Ponca City.

A resident called Ponca City Police Friday morning, stating that she had answered the phone and was immediately asked “Can you hear me?” She’d seen the recent news stories and didn’t answer the caller’s question; she just hung up the phone.

Police recommend not responding and simply disconnecting the call. Even going one step further, police suggest that people don’t answer calls from unfamiliar phone numbers or any unknown number.

According to recent news reports, these scammers record you saying “yes” and then edit and utilize your affirmation to make it sound as if you have accepted offers of major purchases.
