Board approves rezoning for First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church

A request by First Presbyterian Church to zone the property C1 Local Commercial was approved by the Planning Commission Tuesday night.

Annette Newcomb, a Realtor and member of the church’s governing board, said membership at the church has dropped to fewer than 100 members and the board has been attempting to sell the property.

She told the Planning Commission a potential client has expressed interest in purchasing the property, allowing the church to continue meeting in the building, and using a portion of the building for medical offices during business hours.

The agreement would leave the architectural features and the grounds unchanged, and offer financial relief to the congregation, she said.

The proposal also was supported by the congregation of Grace Episcopal Church, located across 14th street from First Presbyterian.

The board’s vote was 6 in favor, 1 against, and 1 abstension.

The matter goes to the City Commission for final action Oct. 14.
