The biological mother of Athena Brownfield has been arrested for two counts of child neglect following the murder of her four-year-old daughter in Caddo County.

Jasmin Adina Kay Brownfield was arrested for child neglect by abandonment after she left Athena and her other daughter in the care of Alysia and Ivon Adams in April 2021.

According to an affidavit, Jasmin told Alysia and Ivon that she was having mental health issues and did not feel that she could adequately care for her children. However, Jasmin failed to maintain communication with the Adams and did not check in on the welfare or safety of her children. The affidavit also says that Jasmin did not provide any financial support to the Adams’ for the care of her children.

On Jan. 10, 2023, Athena’s sibling was found wandering the street near her residence, which is when police discovered that Athena was missing.

On Jan. 12, 2023, investigators spoke with Jasmin, who according to the affidavit, admitted she had left her children in the care of Alysia and Ivon a year and a half prior to Athena’s disappearance. Jasmin told investigators she had signed a hand-written paper that allowed the Adams’ to care for the girls, but nothing that was official through the courts.

“Jasmin did not want Wesley [biological father] to have the girls due to his mental state and prior abuse allegations against him,” the affidavit reads. “Jasmin did not notify the Oklahoma Department of Human Services on the whereabouts of her two children at any time while they were in the care of Alysia and Ivon Adams.”

Documents show that Jasmin said her last contact with her daughters was “seven or eight months” prior to the disappearance of Athena.

“She had attempted to chat with them on the telephone, but they did not appear interested,” the affidavit said. “Jasmin did not visit the girls once they were in the care of Alysia and Ivon. She did not speak to them on birthdays nor holidays.”

The affidavit also said that Jasmin did not provide proper documentation to allow her older daughter to be enrolled in school. There was also no proper documentation for either Athena or her sister to get routine medical care.

Through the course of the investigation, Alysia and Ivon were arrested. Alysia faces charges of child neglect, while Ivon faces charges of first-degree murder and child neglect.

Court documents show that Alysia confessed to authorities that Ivon had beaten Athena to death on Christmas day. Alysia told investigators that Ivon said he buried the four-year-old’s body near a fence line that was next to their old residence in the Rush Springs area.

Jasmin, Alysia and Ivon are being held in the Caddo County Jail.
