Arkansas City man arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Arkansas City Police Department arrested an Arkansas City male Saturday after an incident in which he allegedly pointed a shotgun at another man.

Mason William Smith, 20, was arrested on suspicion of a felony count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. He also was wanted on an Arkansas City district court warrant for failure to appear.

Smith was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in lieu of $20,500 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City. 

Police were dispatched at 10:49 p.m. Saturday to the 700 block of North B Street for a report of a disturbance during which a pump-action shotgun allegedly had been pointed at the reporting party.

When they arrived, they contacted Smith, who was sitting inside his vehicle. He was identified as the primary suspect. Smith complied with officers’ commands and a shotgun was located inside his vehicle.

Further investigation determined the incident had stemmed from an earlier altercation that occurred as Smith and the male victim were traveling to work. Both men work at the same location, police said.

Smith allegedly drove through the intersection of Madison Avenue and Summit Street as the victim was preparing to enter the intersection. This led to a later confrontation after they ended their work shifts.

After work, Smith allegedly followed the victim home. The victim told Smith he needed to leave him alone, but Smith reportedly pulled out the shotgun and pointed it at the victim.

The victim again told Smith to leave and threated to call the police.

Prior to Smith’s arrest, both parties involved and a witness were interviewed by officers.
