Arkansas City man arrested in car-pedestrian collision

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. An Arkansas City man was arrested Friday morning after allegedly striking a 62-year-old female pedestrian with his vehicle, causing non-life-threatening injuries.

Mason William Smith, 19, was arrested by the Arkansas City Police Department on suspicion of aggravated battery. He was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield in lieu of $10,000 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City.

Police responded about 11 a.m. July 8 to the 700 block of North Second Street for a report of a woman who had been struck by a vehicle. The victim had minor injuries to her arms and legs.

She said a vehicle was being driven recklessly in the area and she went to confront the driver about his behavior. As she approached, Smith accelerated and struck her, causing her to fall to the ground.

The victim was checked by the Arkansas City Fire-EMS Department, but declined medical transport.

The suspect, Smith, was located hours later and taken into custody.
