Annual Cherokee Strip Golf Classic September 5, 6, & 7

The 62nd Annual Cherokee Strip Golf Classic is America’s longest-running free-standing pro-am and directly benefits the  Opportunity Center, Inc. an incredible organization devoted to helping the developmentally disabled in Kay County be successful and “live life to the fullest.
”In 1961, a group of friends played an impromptu “golf tournament” to benefit the children of the newly formed Opportunity Center (OPI). The Cherokee strip golf classic was born. The OPI was unique and was founded to help children with developmental disabilities receive training to help them lead a more productive life.
Over 60 years, OPI, has evolved to provide training, residential services and vocational services for these great people. OPI has expanded to include the Positive Impact program with a mission to provide children with services including Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Therapy and Applied Behavior Analysis. The goal of Positive Impact is to provide early intervention services to maximize the potential of children with special needs by providing individualized, family-centered therapy services.
This years event is September 5, 6 and 7.
Golfers will compete in team play with one round at Ponca City Country Club and one round at Wentz Memorial Golf Course (shuttle transportation provided).
Golf Schedule
Thursday, Sept 5th includes practice
rounds, horse races, and the mule race.
Team play is Friday and Saturday, Sept 6th
and 7th.
Team Play
Team play is Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6th
and 7th. Teams are comprised of one
professional player and four amateur
players competing in a two low-ball net
format (using 85% of their handicap). You
may select you own team or just sign up
and we’ll help you select a team.
Entertainment
Evening entertainment will include the
bands Time Machine, Station 9D, fashion
show featuring Wentz and Ponca City
Country Club pro shops, wine tasting, 80s
dance parties, silent disco and much much
more

Team Format — Sept. 5-7

The format will be “two net low ball” of the team (4 amateurs, 1 pro) with the amateurs using 85% of their current handicap. Prizes will be awarded to the top 5 teams in each flight. Both “low gross team skins” and “low net team skins” games will be held each day. The skins entry price is included in the tournament entry fee. The entire field will compete for team calcutta.

Professional Competition — Sept. 5-7

Two Day Stroke-Play Competition. Professionals will compete for a $20,000+ total purse. $6,000 for 1st place in the Open division and $3,000 for 1st place in the Senior division. In addition, we will have a bonus pool for PGA Professionals.

Cherokee Strip Horse Race — Sept. 5

The format will be two amateur players per team participating in an alternating shot competition. Ten teams will compete in each flight. One team will be eliminated per hole based on the highest team score for that hole. In the event of a tie, the team partner not holing out will compete in a chip-off to determine which team is eliminated. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in each flight.

Cherokee Strip Mule Race — Sept. 5

The format will be one professional player paired with an amateur player or two amateur players paired per team participating in an alternating shot competition. A maximum of ten teams will be allowed in this event. The prize money increases throughout this nine-hole event. No teams are eliminated in this event and the winner takes all on each hole.
