Parent Preview Night Scheduled for Growth & Development, Abstinence, HIV/AIDS and Safe Sex Education Classes for Ponca City Schools

The Ponca City Public School District Nurses have scheduled a parent preview night for parents/guardians who would like to review the material that will be discussed and presented at the upcoming Growth and Development, Abstinence, HIV/AIDS, and Safe Sex Education classes. The date scheduled for parents to preview materials is Tuesday, November 19, 2013, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Central Administration Building located at 111 West Grand Avenue in Ponca City. Attendees are asked to enter the building through the west door as the preview will take place in the West Conference Room. The Ponca City School Nurse Consultant and school staff will be presenting this information.

Parents will be receiving a notice that includes an opt-out opportunity. If parents DO NOT want their child to attend these classes, they MUST sign the opt-out form or send a written note with the parent’s signature to the school office or the student’s team teacher. Any student who has opted out of the sessions will be provided an alternative education package at that time.

4th & 5th Grade Parents – Growth and Development and HIV/AIDS Education

Classroom sessions will take place at all elementary schools on varied dates. Classroom sessions will be separated by gender for these discussions.

The 4th grade classroom sessions will present and discuss puberty changes of the male and female. Fifth grade classroom sessions will review the changes of puberty and will introduce information relating to HIV and AIDS.

Objectives:

· To help the student gain an understanding of growth and development and HIV/AIDS

· Promote positive attitudes about the changes of puberty

· Identify the concepts of personal rights, decision making and understanding changes of puberty

· Identify and discuss HIV/AIDS

6th Grade Parents – Abstinence and HIV/AIDS Education
Classroom Sessions: March 24-26, 2014 – Mr. Cash & Mrs. Conner
March 27-31, 2014 – Mrs. Broome

A review of the male and female anatomy will be done by the science teachers prior to the three-day classroom presentation. Discussions of self-respect, goals and expectations, choices and consequences as they relate to abstinence and HIV/AIDS will be presented. Videos pertaining to sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS will also be viewed by the students. Additional immunization information regarding Meningitis and Tdap will be presented to this grade level as well.

Objectives:

· To help the student gain an understanding of abstinence and HIV/AIDS

· Promote positive attitudes about the changes of puberty

· Understand the choice of abstinence

· Identify the concepts of personal rights, decision making, and sexual responsibilities

· Identify sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS

7th Grade Parents – Abstinence and Safe Sex Education and HIV/AIDS Education
Classroom Sessions: January 13-17, 2014 – Mrs. Grace
January 27-31, 2014 – Mr. Webb
February 10-14, 2014 – Mrs. Walker

A review of the male and female anatomy will be done by the science teachers prior to the classroom presentations. Discussions of self-respect, goals and expectations, choices and consequences as they relate to abstinence, safe sex and HIV/AIDS will be presented. Videos pertaining to sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS will also be viewed by the students. Curriculum is provided from the Choosing the Best Path series, which is abstinence based curriculum, and Making Proud Choices, which is safe sex based curriculum. A combination of both curriculums will be provided to the student to assist them in understanding and making choices regarding their sexual responsibilities and the consequences that are available with those choices.
