NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – A Norman police officer who shot and wounded a 70-year-old man last month has been cleared of wrongdoing.

Officer Cody Adkins was cleared Thursday by the department’s internal board of review and returned to full duty. The board determined Adkins complied with the department’s policy and his use of force was justified.

The Norman Transcript reports that officers were called Aug. 28 on a report of an armed man who was threatening to kill people. Court records show police came in contact with Raymond Lee Smith Jr., who placed a gun in his mouth and asked officers to shoot him.

Smith told a detective that he made a movement with the gun that he knew would cause officers to shoot him.

He now faces several firearms charges.
