Sheriff’s office seeks OSBI help in shooting investigation

Ponca City Now - June 20, 2015 9:03 am

Kay County Undersheriff Steve Kelley said Saturday morning that the Sheriff’s Office has sought the help of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to investigate an officer-involved shooting.

The shooting followed an early-morning incident in Newkirk, Kelley said. He said the sheriff’s office had assisted the Newkirk Police Department on a domestic protective order violation when a Newkirk officer and the suspect began to fight. The suspect then jumped into his semi truck and tried to run over a deputy, Kelley said. The deputy then fired a shot.

The suspect, who Kelley would not identify, was transported from Ponca City Medical Center by helicopter. He said he did not believe the injuries were life threatening.

Kelley declined any further comment on the investigation because it has been turned over to the OSBI.
