River search resumes this morning

HEADRICK, Okla. (AP) – Law enforcement officers are returning to a river crossing in southwestern Oklahoma where a person was reported missing.

A search was suspended Thursday night near where U.S. 62 crosses the North Fork of the Red River at Headrick. The site is about 10 miles east of Altus.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the search was suspended at nightfall Thursday. Law officers returned to the site Friday to resume the search.

Much of southern Oklahoma saw heavy rains during May, with some locations receiving more than a foot of water. The rains swelled rivers in the region and Oklahoma’s climatology office says Lake Tom Steed, near Headrick, rose 18 feet during the month.

At least six people have died in Oklahoma in recent weeks because of the bad weather.
