OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – A new study by the American Petroleum Institute shows Oklahoma would rank among the world’s top natural gas producing countries, even surpassing eight of the 12 OPEC countries in total natural gas production.

The study released Thursday uses oil and natural gas production data from 2012, the most recent year for which consistent international data is available.

The United States ranked first in natural gas production with an output of 65.73 billion cubic feet per day, followed by Russia with nearly 60 billion cubic feet per day. Oklahoma produced 5.15 billion cubic feet per day, ranking fifth among the states behind Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Wyoming.

In crude oil production, Russia ranked first at about 10,000 barrels per day, followed by Saudi Arabia and the U.S.
