Students learn about childhood fears

Ponca City Now - May 20, 2015 12:43 pm

Amy Hall’s 6th grade Teen Living classes at West Middle School learned about common childhood fears and ways to help children overcome those fears as part of their child development unit.

They researched a common fear and did a class presentation on their topic.

“We also talked about children who live in domestically violent homes, and how some of these children are uprooted and move to abuse shelters," Hall said . "We tied our learning to our sewing unit as well and made Fear-Me-Not Monsters. Our ‘monsters’ will be donated to the Ponca City Domestic Violence Shelter. Our hopes are that they will help children feel less scared and act as a form of security and comfort for them.

"My students drew an individual Fear-Me-Not character, wrote a profile, and created the monster out of felt and felt scraps using basic hand sewing stitches,” she said.

Amanda Doran, a speaker from the Domestic Violence Shelter, also visited with the 6th grade classes.
