Camp McFadden Expo this weekend

Each year, the Camp McFadden Outdoor Expo features some new things as well as many favorites. This year is no exception.

New this year will be kite making with the Tulsa Wind Riders and outdoor camping games with the Wheeler Dealer Camping Club.

A new fishing spot opens at the new North Pond with the Wildlife Department and a new environmental display with Blue Thumb.

The Outdoor Expo will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

“ We’re planning a full weekend of activities with some new things and lots of favorites,” said Kathy Tippin, Outdoor Expo chairman.

“ Admission is by donation with a suggested donation of $3 per person.”

With each donation, the person will receive three tickets good for three food items from hot dog, chips, drink, ice cream or s’mores.

Returning will be the crowd favorite Dutch Oven Gathering (DOGS) group, cooking up delicious Dutch Oven food; kayaking on the canoe pond; archery; shotguns and more.

Returning favorites include making a walking stick with a shaving horse, and on Sunday, paintball with David Guinn.

Cook your own hot dog over the open camp fire and for dessert toast a marshmallow and fix a s’more.

The Tulsa Wind Riders Kite Flying Group will teach families how to make a Dermersled kite. Jason McCaleb, club member, said the kite is named after Richard Dermer, former president of the American Kite Flyers Association and late owner of the famous Hideaway Pizza in Stillwater.

The technique for making the kite has been taught to people around the world, according to Tulsa Wind Riders President Larry Lee Stiles. Club members will instruct and also fly some of their other kites.

Kite making is limited to one per family and there is a $2 charge to cover materials.

The Wheeler Dealers Camping Club is an area group that will be camping during the Outdoor Expo and giving people the opportunity to play various games, including horse shoes, washers, bolo golf and more.

President Darryl Klopp said they hope to share with others the fun of camping and how they can join the organization.

Many of the traditional Camp McFadden Outdoor Expo activities include canoeing and on the pond, hiking, learning about beekeeping with the local beekeepers, nature scavenger hunt, archery, shotgun shooting and more.

And rides down the Zip Line are $5 per person.

“ We look forward to sharing Camp McFadden with people and show the many fun things we do during summer camp,” said Camp Director Mickie Schmith.

“ Our summer camp staff will be available to show people around the camp and talk to families about how they can register their children for our summer camp program.”
