McCane Introduces Bill to Expand Oklahoma’s Promise to Children of Public School Employees

OKLAHOMA CITY – House Rep. Michelle McCane, D-Tulsa, introduced HB 1020 which would expand the Oklahoma Higher Access Learning Program, or Oklahoma’s Promise, to children of certain public school employees.

The bill would expand Oklahoma’s Promise to students whose guardian is a public school employee, such as a teacher, librarian, certified or registered nurse, or support employee who has been a public school employee for at least five consecutive years.

“If we value education and the people that provide and support it, this is one way to prove it,” McCane said. “By lifting one burden from our public school employee’s shoulders we can again be competitive in attracting teachers and other school staff at a time when we are experiencing record vacancies and substitute shortages. Expanding Oklahoma’s Promise to the very people who lay the foundation of that promise will also help retain the experienced staff we need to grow and improve our schools.”
