Sarah Jane Hoogendoorn of Blackwell, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2024, at her home west of Blackwell at the age of 77 years.

Sarah Jane Hoogendoorn was born on August 7, 1947, in Blackwell to Wilford L. and Mamie Margaret (Turner) Scott. She grew up in Blackwell attending Blackwell Public Schools. Following graduation, she continued at Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa where she received her Associate’s Degree. She then transferred to Alva where she completed a Bachelors and Masters Degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. She married John Edward Hoogendoorn on October 18, 1968, in Blackwell and they just celebrated 56 years of marriage. She began her educational career in the Arkansas City Public Schools where she taught for a year. She then began an extensive career with the Blackwell Public Schools where she taught at Washington and Northside Elementary Schools before teaching English and serving as the counselor at Blackwell Middle School. After forty-two years she retired. She was a member of the Mormon Church, the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Winged Riders and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladie’s Auxiliary. Her hobbies included spending time with her
“granddogs,” cooking, reading and solving crossword and Sudoku puzzles. She also enjoyed feeding her donkeys, Jackie and Fiona. Her greatest love was spending time with family and traveling with her beloved husband, John.

She is survived by her husband John of Blackwell; three daughters, Amber Zimmerschied and Misty Gilmartin of Blackwell, Alisa McCleary and husband Josh of Ponca City and Amy Schneider and husband Brian of Coyle; a son, Jeremy Hoogendoorn of Blackwell; a sister, Ruby Ricketts and husband Terry of Guthrie; a brother, Gary Scott and Cheryl Kraft of Berneice; eleven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Olive Sprueill and Mary Flewelling; and a brother, Jesse Scott.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, November 16th at 1:00 p.m. in the Blackwell High School Auditorium with Rich Donaldson of the Mormon Church officiating.

Honorary casketbeares will be Jordan Matlock, Joshua Zimmerschied, Alexis Kirkbride, Marrick Siebold, Bryce Schneider, Mason McCleary, Josh McCleary, Brian Schneider, Terry Ricketts, Jeremy Hoogendoorn, Gary Scott, Joey Tabor, Rusty Tabor, Rylee Schneider, Sawyer Seibold and Terry Grace.
