LeRoy was born in Ponca City Oklahoma on November 17, 1939, to Logan M. And Mable Grayson. Leroy attended Ponca City High where he graduated. After graduating, he married Judy Pruett on October 13, 1956, in Arkansas City, KS. They made their home in Ponca City for a short time before LeRoy joined the Navy. LeRoy served in the Vietnam war for 4 tours. He retired from the Navy in 1979. He then moved his wife and 3 children back to Ponca City where they made their home. He was married to Judy for 54 yrs when she passed away June 28, 2010.
LeRoy loved going to Mountain Men Rendezvous. He enjoyed the whole family being around him in the shooting competition, and oh how he loved some good ole’ Apple pie. One of LeRoy’s other favorite things was his 1968 Impala. That was his grown up toy for sure. He liked driving around the lake with top down with old country music blasting through the speakers. LeRoy looked forward to “deer camp” every season. He loved being in the woods with his grandsons, Robert Lackey, Jeremy Evans and granddaughter, Cheyenne Bottger; teaching them how to hunt, and later making Robert and Jeremy run the deer towards him so he didn’t have to do the walking.
On November 16, 2014 LeRoy married Marlene Haynes. They made their home in Webb City, MO, until LeRoy’s health brought him back to his home in Ponca City in 2019. When LeRoy returned home to Ponca, he was cared for by two of his granddaughters, Judy Conrady and Casie Silva, who took care of him day and night for 5 years. They were with him when he passed peacefully, holding their hands.
LeRoy was preceded in death by: his wife, Judy; son, Bobby Leon, son, Jerry, and daughter, Kathryn LaFleur. He has left behind so many people that loved him, respected him, and will miss him greatly. He is survived by: his daughter, Kim and her husband, David Lowery, of Inola, OK; Marlene Grayson and her son, Bradley of Webb City MO: 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and multiple great-great grandchildren. This Poppyman touched so many lives there is no way to list each one.
