Oklahoma Monarch Society Launches Statewide Plan To Boost Butterfly Populations

For nearly a decade, the Oklahoma Monarch Society and its initiative, ‘Okies for Monarchs,’ have worked to combat the decline of monarch butterflies and other native pollinators.

Their efforts are now set to advance with the launch of Statewide Monarch Conservation Action Plan 2.0, which will outline specific strategies to increase the monarch population.

The urgency of these efforts is highlighted by the steep 59.3% drop in the monarch population in 2023.

Oklahoma plays a crucial role in supporting these butterflies, as the state lies within their migratory path.

Monarchs journey from Mexico through the Great Plains to the northern United States in the spring, and they pass back through in the fall.

More than 60 organizations across the state—including tribes, ranchers, farmers, and educators—are united in these conservation efforts.
