Students build dog houses, boxes at Pioneer Technology Center

While the weather was keeping students inside, James Kirkendall, new Construction Technology instructor at Pioneer Technology Center, was keeping them busy honing their skills with projects that can house a four-legged friend.

Doghouses and dog boxes were popular choices for his students these past few months. The dog boxes are being displayed in the PTC hallway. They are brightly finished in OSU and OU colors, as well as symbols.

Earlier in the year, the construction students also completed cabinets. Kirkendall plans for students to build additional cabinets, tables, bookshelves and even hunting blinds in the future.

Construction Technology is a program open to adults and high school students. In the beginning, individuals learn about hammers and handsaws, then work up to hand tools and power equipment, as well as developing math and measurement proficiency. Upon completion, students can build cabinets, furniture, framing and houses.

Earlier in the year, the group built a hunting cabin, complete with a sleeping loft and plumbing hook-ups. When finished, some projects are auctioned at publicsurplus.com,which assists the program in recouping costs incurred on materials. Students in this program can also use their skills to compete in regional, state and national events.
