KAY COUNTY SHERIFF STEVE KELLEY ALONG WITH HIS DEPUTIES AND STAFF ARE EXCITED TO BEGIN ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE ANNUAL KAY COUNTY SHERIFF CITIZENS ACADEMY. APPLICATIONS CAN BE PICKED UP AT THE KAY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE OR OBTAINED BY CALLING 580-362-3250 AND WE WILL EMAIL YOU A COPY OF THE APPLICATION. YOU CAN ALSO FIND THE APPLICATION ON THE KAY COUNTY WEBPAGE – PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION AND RETURN IT TO OUR OFFICE WHEN COMPLETE. THE ACADEMY WILL BEGIN THURSDAY, AUGUST 22nd, 2024 , AND THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS WILL BE FRIDAY, AUGUST 8th, 2024. THE CITIZENS ACADEMY IS A 9-WEEK PROGRAM, HELD THURSDAY EVENINGS FROM 6:00PM – 9:00PM AT THE KAY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND PIONEER TECH. THE ACADEMY IS FREE OF CHARGE BUT THE CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED.
THIS ACADEMY IS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES AND THE ISSUES THAT FACE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ON A DAILY BASIS; IT WAS ESTABLISHED TO FOSTER A SPIRIT OF COOPERATION BETWEEN THE COUNTY, THE CITIZENS AND THEIR SHERIFF’S OFFICE. CITIZENS WILL LEARN ABOUT VIRTUALLY EVERY ASPECT OF A DEPUTY’S JOB FROM RECRUITING, ADMINISTRATION, PATROL OPERATIONS, DISPATCH COMMUNICATIONS, TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT, CRIMINAL LAW, JUVENILE OFFENDERS, DETECTIVES, CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATIONS, K9 OPERATIONS AND THE CORRECTIONS FACILITY.
***IMPORTANT: THIS TRAINING IS NOT DESIGNED TO CERTIFY CITIZENS TO PERFORM LAW ENFORCEMENT SERVICES. IT IS TO ENHANCE COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND PROVIDE CITIZENS WITH INSIGHTS INTO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. ALL APPLICANTS MUST RESIDE IN THE KAY COUNTY AREA, MUST BE 18 YEARS OLD OR OLDER AND MUST PASS A BACKGROUND CHECK BEFORE BEING ACCEPTED INTO THE ACADEMY.***
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IS THE MOST POWERFUL TOOL A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY HAS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CRIME AND, AFTER THE ACADEMY, YOU WILL HAVE THE TOOLS NECESSARY TO HELP THE KAY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AS WELL AS OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THE PREVENTION OF CRIME AND KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY SAFE.
