Oklahoma Attorney General Testifies on Border Crisis at Mayorkas Impeachment Hearing

TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond spent Wednesday in Washington D.C. testifying before the U.S. House Committee of Homeland Security during the first impeachment hearing against Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas.

In his testimony, Drummond explained the gravity of the border crisis that he says Oklahoma has been battling for years. Drummond says the border crisis has brought an influx of drug and sex trafficking as well as the operation of illegal marijuana grow facilities.

“We have so many people that have come across the border illegally, are put in these grow facilities where they’re also processing and distributing fentanyl, sex trafficking, and labor trafficking, and they themselves are also victims. They’re helpless in a world of crime,” said Drummond.

Drummond, joined by three other State Attorneys General, explained the need for Oklahoma to create a task force designed to fight crimes associated with illegal immigration.

Congressman Josh Brecheen was also in attendance at the hearing, questioning the attorney generals and explaining why he believes Mayorkas’ actions are grounds for impeachment.

“What we tolerate we empower. Congress has to do its job and send a strong signal if you don’t follow the law you’re gonna be out,” said Brecheen.

While Republicans are pushing for the impeachment of Mayorkas, some are warning against the move.

In a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, one bipartisan group of legal scholars says that impeaching a cabinet member over policy disagreements is unconstitutional.

Senate Republicans are also skeptical of the idea, with some arguing that there will still be a crisis at the border whether or not Mayorkas is impeached.
