Area Forcast; Quakenado Anniversary

Ponca City Now-NWS-Beverly Cantrell - November 7, 2023 4:20 pm

November 7, 2011 was the Day of the “Quakenado” in Oklahoma.

On the 12th Anniversary we remember a day in Oklahoma History when we had a series of Earthquakes and Tornadic activity across Oklahoma.

That includes a 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake in the Sooner State near Prague apparently caused by wastewater injections on November 6. That quake may also be the largest ever linked to wastewater injection. Felt as far away as Milwaukee, more than 800 miles away, the quake—the biggest ever recorded in Oklahoma–destroyed 14 homes, buckled a federal highway and left two people injured.

Small earthquakes continue to be recorded in the area.

On November 7, there were active earthquake aftershocks ongoing during a Tornado Outbreak across Southwestern Oklahoma.
