Rep. Luttrell Visits Normandy, France

OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Ken Luttrell, R-Ponca City, along with over 40 Oklahoma House of Representatives members, traveled to Normandy, France, to attend the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Executive Leadership Development program.
“Taking part in the wreath-laying ceremony at the American Cemetery with fellow Veteran, Representative Kannady, was an honor and a privilege,” Luttrell said. “I found it profoundly moving to recognize a war casualty from Osage County, Private William Bray, 359 Infantry, 90 Division, who died in Normandy June 14, 1944. In recognition of his bravery, sacrifice, and service, Oklahoma and American flags were laid at his tombstone.”
While in Normandy, the members studied the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944, which ultimately turned the tide of World War II. The program taught the five principles of leadership: courage, imagination, responsibility, risk-taking and sacrifice.
The D-Day invasion was planned for over two years, and the members studied how the Allied commander and future president, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, demonstrated authentic leadership by seeking input from captains and privates.
Luttrell visited historical sites around France, including the American Cemetery in Normandy, with over 9,300 soldiers buried there. Luttrell said seeing their final resting place was a surreal experience that left everyone contemplating freedom’s price and the bravery of those who defend it.
