Trout students display reading prizes

Ponca City Now - February 4, 2015 11:18 am

During morning assemblies at Trout Elementary, students have been answering questions about “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” and getting their names put in a fish bowl for prize drawings.

The district started the “One Book, One District” project on Jan. 5. Five of the district’s elementary schools and The Marland Children’s Home chose to participate.

Every family received a copy of the book. Each participating school has been having daily trivia or comprehension questions based on the chapter read from the previous night.

“We had a drawing half way through the book and gave away a family game and a pillow pet," Trout Principal Carla Fry said. "Our final drawing was held this week, and the students in the picture were the winners. They each received board games to continue the family involvement at home with Family Fun Nights we have been encouraging.”

“One Book, One District” is a unique program that promotes literacy, parental involvement, the love of reading, higher level thinking, and quality family time. Reading professionals recommend reading material aloud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. Reading aloud to children promotes growth in comprehension and fluency.
